Effective Listening
Most of us think we are good listeners but research has shown that many actually do not listen well and the cost of poor listening is high. Listening is an on-going process and a good leader listens effectively.
Effective listening is active listening. We are interested in comprehending what is being said before we respond with our own new message. Listening effectively is difficult coz communication skills aare different. In addition, different situations and levels of communication also add to the difficulty of listening effectively.
When we listen, we attend to the level that we think is most important. If we fail to recognise the level most relevent and important to the speaker, we have missed out on the main message.
When people listen effectively, their objective is to understand and to remember what they are hearing. In addition, effective listeners also project a positive impression especially in relational and caring skills.
